South Dakota is home to 776,000 people and the deepest mine in the United States, the Homestake gold mine in the Black Hills. Its shaft plunges more than 8,000 feet beneath the surface. From 1969 to 1993, it was home to the Homestake Chlorine Solar Neutrino Experiment, used for solving the solar neutrino problem.
