Montana covers 145,552 square miles and is the fourth largest in the United States. Derived from the Spanish word montaņa 'mountain' because of the numerous mountain ranges and the Rocky Mountains. The largest city is Billings with a population of 100,000. Roughly defined by the Continental Divide, the topography of the state is diverse.
