Your apartment complex may frown on cats and dogs and specifically state that you can't have them. But that's where you have to get creative. There are quite a few unique pets that can brighten your home and life. You may need to check with your apartment manger to see what regulations there are concerning exotic pets. Even though exotic pets aren't technically covered in most leases your apartment manger may still be able to keep your security deposit. If you're looking for an exotic pet, here are some ideas and ways to care for your new pet.
Ferrets are very energetic and extremely sociable. They are pretty easy-going and do not require any kind of toys. Usually when you play with a ferret, it's a hid-and-seek type of activity or a tug-of-war game. When ferrets get excited, they are prone to accident. Make sure there is nothing that the ferret can trip or fall on. Ferrets can be litter trained, but they are also prone to spread their waste to mark their territory. That's why it helps to invest in several litter boxes and spread them throughout your apartment. Your ferret's diet should consist of mostly protein (32 percent) and about 18 percent fat. You can also give your ferret raw chicken or ferret food sold at pet stores. Ferrets make wonderful pets because of their loving and gentle nature.
Sugar Gliders are small gliding possums about 16 to 21 cm long and about 90 to 150 grams in weight. These animals are lively and curious creatures that really bond with humans. Sugar Gliders require a lot of attention and if you are not able to spend a whole lot of time with your pet you should either get two or another kind of pet. Sugar Gilders require so much attention that if left alone too much or if they feel neglected, they will stop eating and eventually die. Sugar Gliders are omnivores, meaning they eat a variety of foods from insects to fruits and vegetables. Feeding one of these pets is pretty easy, just go easy on the sugar.
Chinchillas are sweet little rabbit-sized rodents that are quite docile and loving if raised from a kit. Male chinchillas tend to be easier to raise than females because female chinchillas tend to be temperamental. Wooden toys and even paper towel rolls are a favorite toy of chinchillas, but they enjoy even chewing sticks or wood sticks, too. Just be sure they are non-toxic. A chinchilla's diet mainly consists of a high-quality hay-based pellet and loose pieces of hay. Chinchillas are predominantly nocturnal and get a little testy if bothered during the day. That's why they are ideal pets if you have a third shift job.
If having a cat or dog is not an option for you, look into getting one of these sweet exotic pets. Most are very loving and quite simple to take care of. Make sure you do proper research on your new pet and ask your apartment manager about rules concerning exotic pets. Some apartments don't even charge for caged animals, so it might be worth looking into.
