Decorating your apartment can be an exciting project. But if you don't have the funds, you might not get very far. The key to decorating your apartment wisely and with flair is to maximize all your space while spending minimal cash. It's actually a lot easier than it sounds.
When decorating your apartment, the first thing you have to do is to size up your place. If your apartment is on the smaller size you may have to choose a couch or that cute chair. The next thing you should do is go with a theme. Is there a certain style that you really like? Do you enjoy something like Victorian or Country? Picking a theme ties a room or even the entire apartment together. Usually you can find what your theme is by looking at the stuff you already have. Maybe you collect things like old movie posters or Asian-inspired furniture or art. If so, there's the start of your theme. Go with what you like and try to stay with that theme. You can even draw out a little blueprint on how you want things to look. When you organize your thoughts, you're off to a great start.
There are ways of making a small space look bigger and more comfortable. It's all about how you do it. Arranging your furniture and pictures can make a big difference in your apartment. Moving your couch from one wall to another may seem like a simple gesture but it can really open up a room. You can have two apartments of the same size with the same furniture - one looks big and open the other one looks cramped and uncomfortable. It's all about how the furniture is arranged and where the pictures are hanging. If your apartment has large windows, take advantage of that. Using sheer curtains with sheer window treatments can make your room look chic and it lets a lot of sun in while giving you privacy. If your apartment complex lets you paint your walls, stick with a lighter color on the walls to give an appearance of a bigger room. If your ceiling seems a little low, paint your ceiling a lighter color than the walls. It will make your ceiling look higher and the room a little bigger. Using mirrors is a great way to make your apartment seem a lot bigger. They work best in narrow hallways and on the narrowest wall of a rectangular room.
Once you have all your ideas it's time for you to shop. Being on a tight budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your style. There are plenty of discount stores, such as Big Lots and dollar stores, that have just about everything you could possibly need. Other great places to find good bargains are garage sales. You can find all kinds of retro styles for a steal!
Style does not have to suffer because of money. A tight budget just means you get to be more creative. Just remember to pick a theme and stick with that. There are plenty of discount stores, garage sales, estate sales and flea markets to choose from that you'll be able to find everything you need guilt-free.
